In Pursuit of the Snow Leopard, I Followed Her Into the Trees

Learn how to heal

Many years ago a prominent physician diagnosed me with a condition that would result in paralysis of my entire body. Years after that prognosis, I lost much of the use of my right arm. I was desperate to regain the use of my arm. The medical field said there was no use to hope for help from them and so, in my wish to heal, I turned to God. My idea of god then was new to me and very colorful. Angels, I believed, were not humans with wings, but rather came in the disguise of animals who could impart spiritual qualities. The wolf taught me to trust the community for help. The puma taught me to have the courage that could devour my fears completely. Dolphins taught me to move on the currents of a greater force called life. The trees taught me to listen to the earth while reaching for the spirit world of the sky. And the goddess…well she gave me the motivation to heal. In order to follow her, I had to heal my body. In short, I created an image that allowed me to feel what it was like to climb a big tree with two arms completely healed.

At the time, I smiled at this painting, wondering if it was real or just a desperate act of wishful thinking. Many months after completing this painting I had forgotten the reason I created it. It was not until six months later that I realized that my arm had completely healed and I began to remember the prayer I had created.
