The Child Angel This painting is a prayer asking for compassion. For the Balinese, children are their most important connection to God. As a religious duty, no child is allowed to touch the ground for the first half year of his or her life. During this time, they are carried and cuddled the entire time they are awake. The Balinese believe that children are not just their future. They are their reincarnated great grandparents. One day, each person who dies will be reborn as their own grandchildren's children. My ancestors, the early Europeans, also believed this to be true. To believe this gives me much hope for the future of the world. If you knew that an action you took today would create a result in your world that you would inherit within, let us say, 100 years, then that action might be given more personal consideration. In America, the Iroquois Nation of the American Natives would ask themselves how any decision would impact the 8th generation of their offspring. In my painting, The Child Angel, I have asked for the secret to being happy in each moment. My angel has stepped 8 generations to reach me with a reply. |
